I am not interested in the past, except as the road to the future.

It’s sometimes said that I’m rebellious and I do things to push people’s buttons, but I just like the challenge. It’s really easy to get colors right. It’s really hard to get black – and neutrals – right. Black is certainly a color but it’s also an illusion. I think the idea of mixing luxury and mass-market fashion is very modern, very now – no one wears head-to-toe designer anymore. Fashion never stops. There is always the new project, the new opportunity. My dresses are very reasonably priced, for dresses that are cut on the body.

Today, I’m very happy about myself, because I realized my dreams. I learned how to understand what people want. Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury. I am never satisfied with myself and that is what keeps me going – I have no post-satisfaction. Design and style should work toward making you look good and feel good without a lot of effort so you can get on with the things that matter. I’m an accomplice to helping women get what they want.

I am convinced that you don’t need to spend a fortune to look like a million. I’ve treated the waistcoat as if it were a corset, so that it becomes the first layer in the process of putting clothes on the body. There is constant motion between layering and revealing. Design is a series of creative choices – it’s a collaborative effort, an evolutionary process. You choose your fabrics depending upon what you want to say, then you work with mills to get those fabrics. Through the process, you realize what you want it to be. I am never satisfied with myself and that is what keeps me going – I have no post-satisfaction. Jeans represent democracy in fashion.

The only way to do something in depth is to work hard. Sometimes the simplest things are the most profound. I get ideas about what’s essential when packing my suitcase. My customers are successful workingwomen. I’m a fashion designer and people think, what do I know?
